I currently am a volunteer at The Ranch at Saving Wild Horses, a Center for hope and healing. We cater exclusively to the needs of Mustang horses and inner city disadvantaged your between the ages of 7-16. We operate a 30 acre horse barn in western New York which could house 32 horses. Most of our 3 strike mustang rescue horses have been adopted and we want to bring more Mustang horses in, but the owner of the barn is putting it up for sale. Please help us continue this amazing ministry. It is awesome to see these horses with the kids but we need help to purchase the property.

Having viewed the video(s)I am convinced that something needs to be done. I cried when I saw how this very noble creatures are corraled by helicopter and run to exhaustion, one couldn't go faster and was hit by the helicopter and fell, than was kicked and draged by the tail. Madeleine, in a world where the rich seem to lavish on themselves obscene luxuries, it is refreshing to see someone who is using their riches as a echo of God's sense of compassion and mercy. I applaud your tireless efforts into this noble cause, my daughter in Washington State owns one of these gentle Mustangs and although never broke he will allow my 3 year old granddaughter to ride him without even a flicker of his withers. I have been unable however to find where you ranch is, or information on how to visit. Perhaps the information has been right under my nose and I just haven't seen it, but could you please send me information and costs for visiting your ranch? Thank you so much for what you are doing, Barbara Henley

Dear Mrs. Madeleine Pickens, You have made an indelible mark on the world of living animals, especially horses, and their one-of-a-kind age-old bond between human and horse. Your contribution to equine safety and protection is the heart and soul of every horse lover. Your commitment to nurturing them and prioritizing their comfort and wellbeing is designed to ensure that the horses enjoy their lives. We should pay close attention to the horses to ensure that every request of them is respectful of what they are ready to offer. We all must have patience, trust, as well as a genuine sense of caring to inevitably strengthen and support our horses. Sincerely, Cheryl Faye Jackson

Dear, Madeleine I viewed a news report on your effort to save the wild mustangs and I found your website. I can understand why you put so much effort into this. I love wild horses and in my lifetime i was only blessed once to care and cherish one. In 1982 I was 18 years old in the Air Force and stationed in Clovis NM. A military friend had orders to leave and gave me his Reservation Pony. I called her "Ginger Wildfire" she was only about 14 hands but had a huge spirit. In Gingers lifetime before we met she roamed NM Wildly then was put into a rescue, until her first owner obtained her. I had heard through the grapevine that the person who broke her did so with abuse of a water hose. Now, I have to tell you I am from Texas but from the city limits of San Antonio. The closest I had ever come to riding a horse was at the corner store and I had to pay a quarter. LOL As a new airman In the Air Force I only made minimum wage so with no trailer available I had to ride and walk "Ginger Wildfire" over 12 miles to get her to the stables by the Air Force Base. I rode her Bareback, and she rode pretty gentle then when we got to the Highway she decided to show me her impression of a mule. LOL As I started to walk her across the 4 lane highway she got about halfway when she took the Mule stance. I bet it was the funniest site for anyone to see. There I was at only 5'2 inches in height and weighing 110 lbs yanking, pushing, and pulling my onery little mule headed horse across the road. I had to rent and electric fence pen with a small shelter in the far back of the stables. At the time it is what I could afford. Months passed and Ginger Wildfire and I became so close, she trusted me. Madeleine, wild horses are amazing and intelligent. They never lose their spirit. Everyday when I came to see Ginger I parked in the front of the land, there was a stable and rodeo arena between us that blocked her view from me. Nonetheless all I had to do was whistle and she would start to neigh and run around back and forth looking until she saw me, I think she loved me as much as I loved her. Amazing I say because "Ginger Wildfire" could play hide and go seek with me. There were a few Huge yucca plants in her corral. I would tell her to stay and take off to hide behind the plants. I would whistle and she would come running from plant to plant looking for me. We had a special bond. She did get into mischief. There were numerous time the horse stable owner would call me at work and tell me Ginger was out of her corral. I would have to leave work, most of the time I found her hanging around the stables with other horses. I would lead her back to her corral. Her gate was always still locked. I opened it and lead her in, then I'd walk the whole corral trying to figure out HOW she escaped. Madeleine, Wild Horses are INTELLIGENT. One day after I took her back in the pen I hid by the stables and watched. Now I told you the fence was electric, all but the metal long gate that I locked. In New Mexico the ground is desert red sand. Ginger would lay down on her side, back towards the fence. There was a dip under the fence. She would then proceed to shimmy back and forth until she made it UNDER the fence. Then she would stand Up and head to the stable. LOL Months later I found out why she visited the stable. I walked into the pen one day and there stood a mini version....a little stud I called TEXAS Wildfire. Oh Boy I had a lot to learn about Horses. I have so Much More to say about this beautiful creature and her baby that God Blessed in my life, but I know you have a mission to work on. One day these stories will all be in a book. I am Now a Retired 100 % Disabled veteran. My partner and I have 2 children. There is one Place I always took them to go visit every year. Yes, New Mexico. I wanted them to see the beauty of the land and I always had a story of Ginger and Texas Wildfire to tell them about. I guess I wanted them to understand my experiences in life. Three years ago We all went to Cloudcroft NM so I could let them snow tube in the National Forest. That late afternoon as we were descending the mountain a car up ahead braked hard on a curve. I slowed thinking there was an accident. As we crept around the sharp curve, there in the road was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. There Madeleine, standing in the icy road surrounded by snow and majestic mountainside, was a HERD of Wild Horses!! I stopped the car, and we all leaned out the windows for a better look, I was in awe. the genuine beauty of them was more than I can describe. Smoke poured from their nostrils then in the next moment the lead stallion reared his head and popped his tail and they were off running full speed through the snow, a white cloud of dust flying behind them. A tear came to my eye as I thought of My Sweet Ginger and Texas, whom many years before I had to leave behind. I pray you can save these beautiful creatures. I will post your sight on my Facebook. Wild Mustangs have a friend in you INDEED. You are a blessing in that being blessed with finances that you can lead a great fight to save an American Wild Mustang (Horse). God Bless You Sincerely, Helen Tiseth USAF RET DAV (Troiboizlife)

Dear Madeleine ~ The wild horses in Nevada are blessed to have you as their champion. On their behalf, I thank you. I am writing to ask you for advice about fighting for another animal issue: the fur trade in China, with its sickening cruelty. I watched an undercover video by a Swiss organization. I have cried over the plight of these poor animals ever since viewing that video (and others related). I have the url links to the videos if you would like to see them for yourself. I have written letters to the White House and the Department of State, since we have trade agreements with China, and therefore, leverage. Of course I have not heard back from them. Also I have joined PETA. If you are interested in helping these animals (dogs, cats, racoon dogs, and racoons as well), please advise me of a way I can be effective in this fight. I am a 56-year-old and take care of my 80-year-old mother 24/7. I have rescued domestic animals (and a few wild ones) for most of my life. Please help.

Dear Mrs. Madeleine Pickens My name is Ed Arthur (Pete). I am the assistant director for cultural resources for the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. I work with a wild horse herd here in Washington State that is the last wild horse herd in the state of Washington that is not on a reservation. I am desperately trying to save and preserve these horses. I could use help. I am asking for a return address that I can send the history of these horses, for you to read. After you have had the time to review the information you can then make your own determination of is these horses the remnants of a once wealthy horse tribe. Thanks Always Ed Arthur (Pete)

Dear Ms Pickens, Saving America Mustangs- Last year BLM had a TV show on PBS on the problems on management and costs of its western lands. I use for recreation not for any ranching. Part of the show was on horses, it was sided as it gave only the problems and not the history of the west or the importance the horse stills plays in Americana. It showed how expensive it was to use Helicopters to round up the horses. May I suggest, adding a twist to the BLM/ranchers -- as to win a war sometimes it is wise to engage an enemy as a friend in smaller battles. BLM and the ranchers would jump on the save the horse if it was beneficial to them? Let me give you an example. The buffalo had no purpose until it became a part of what a free American stood for. The ranch owners could not stop public opinion. NO one had any use for Geronimo until public opinion changed from him being an enemy to one of a strong independent fighting hero. I can almost guarantee that even the Paiute Indian would embrace the horse if they could see the financial gain and prestige that a few changes would bring if the horse was adapted “into” instead of being rejected. Am example here is the Native American or Indian gambling casino. As soon as the opinion changed it all was suddenly necessary. I am not in politics or anything of that nature but I am a careful observer of peoples attitudes. In 1971 the BLM only changed its policy on the shooting and poisoning mustangs because of public opinion. They fought such change because of a few vocal ranch owners. When I mention the western or wild horses very few know of or understand what it means as part of America, part of all of us. I truly hope you succeed as it is our history, everything from this moment on is all based on keeping our history fresh which includes our wild lands the horses alive and in our hearts. Even Ford still uses this metaphor to sell trucks. Mike Carpenter from Arizona

Dear Madaline and all horse rescuers, I am so glad that there are still people out there who care about these animals. I can not stand to see the fear in the horses eyes as they are being rounded up.I will never understand why people can be so cruel to animals and not care. These are Gods creatures and the fact that humans could care less makes me sick.If the horses could talk they would say thank you. I hope you will continue the fight to keep them were they belong in the wild and on your sanctuary.

I was very lucky to have met Travis aka "Alligator" as I left the races yesterday. It was truly Serendipitous as it was the highlight of the day! Talking to him about the Mustangs made me think of the horse sculptures in Las Colinas, TX. I lived there a long time ago and couldn't remember what kind of horses they were so I came home and Googled it and they are Mustangs! I'm sure you have heard of them and how beautiful they are (http://www.mustangsoflascolinas.com/History.html) but I can't wait to see what your monument will be. Thank you for doing this for our Mustangs.

Madeleine Pickens, I know there are a lot of people working and supporting your vision. I applaud YOUR drive, energy and commitment to leading this mission. I ask God to continue to give you strength and guidance and keep you in good care. I have always been passionate about horses and their gentle spirits and amazing powerful strength. These beautiful creatures don't use their powerful strength to fight back. It hurts to see them just try to flee and take this awful abuse with such fear and horrific trauma. They stand in over-crowded hot metal pens, in horrible heat with no shade, being abused and afraid, without any proper care or proper nourishment. They just stand and wait... and wait for 2-3 years. Yes, wait while so called decision-makers discuss it over an expensive lunch and a fancy cocktail for 2-3 minutes (lunch write-off justified). What kind of "human" who holds a position to make this stop actually goes to bed every night without shame? I am so disgusted to know that those same humans are well aware of the MANY contributions to our country made by horses. Humans even made them fight and die with us in war; and these innocent creatures did so... very obediently. Now they are rounded up and abused and treated so horribly. I was NEVER exposed to any of this activity until today, Madeleine. You bet I cried. And you bet I'm mad. Anger, however, is wasted energy. I want you to know I saw and heard your call, Madeleine. I have little to offer to make this stop, BUT I do have a voice... unlike our precious horses. Thank you for educating so many of us, Madeleine. I am left with the question, "How can ANY human abuse such innocent flight animals who have given us so much?" I am trying to stay positive. For today, I can only take a very deep breadth, ignore some pretty damn ugly human behavior, and try hard to visualize these beautiful healthy horses running free with their precious little babies! It will be tough to sleep tonight as my thoughts are racing. Thank you for the opportunity to thank you and your good soul and kind spirit, Madeleine. You are making a difference and standing up on their behalf. Thank you so much for all that you do and have already accomplished. Sincerely, Sylvia from Chicago

Madeleine is today's Wild Horse Annie. I grew up with the wild horses in Nevada. It is disturbing to see the cruel helicopter hunters chasing America's heritage down with such cold hearts...and deep pockets. Public awareness to this continued violation of the Wild Horses and Burros Act and the lack of care by the BLM for the injuries and deaths caused by the treatment of our wild horses and burros should not be ignored. Mustang Monument is a wonderful beginning to a better future for our wild horses.

Thank you for taking the initiative. The spirit of the Mustangs feed us all, ... if we all them to. I think this narrative is even more important for all our new immigrants to get. Being one myself, my life experience in the US got all that much better when I experienced the spirit of our land here ... for me it was out in Indian Country at a Wolf Sanctuary in Ramah, NM. God Bless you all.

I think you and Madeleine Pickens are doing an amazing job and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have lost a great deal of sleep over this issue and will not rest comfortably until the mustangs and burros are safe again. I understand Ted Turner has taken an advisory role. This is great news as, from what I have read, he seems a really good man. I am keeping up to date and posting on my blog and Facebook regularly. Madeleine, dare I suggest that you try and rally the support of Pat and Linda Parelli, he has global reach now and may add even further clout to your efforts. Shelley and I have 5 horses here in Scotland and embrace a natural horsemanship approach. We love them as family and like family, will be with us for life. God bless you and give you strength to continue your wonderful work, we know you will win through in the end.
