I can't believe that of all animals inhabiting the wild in areas populated by wild horses its the horse that gets the shaft! I, too own domestic horses but am aware that these are wild animals, animals not accustomed to living in people made pens. No one checks to see if they mix bands in their "Holding" areas, a fate similar to penning up any of the feuding peoples together. IMHO the bottom line is they want horses out of the way so they can allow more cattle to graze our public lands. They forget, its not "Cattleman's lands" it AMERICAN PUB:IC land.

I have Miniature Horses, but would like to see their larger counter parts preserved as part of our Horse Heritage. In the Horse world we all know what they represent, and what we all learn from them.

I wrote and I vote - my feet won't touch Nevada soil until they stop listening to someone who has a vested financial interest in the outcome. I will also stop eating beef and am encouraging everyone I know to stop eating beef - then maybe he'll change his tune when more econi=omic upheaval is thrown his way!

BTW I am just 12 years old but I have done almost six months of research and it shows that horses aren't being sent across the borders to slaughter houses. That's a downright lie. Slaughter houses for wild horses have been shut down. They were shut down almost five years ago. Also even before they shut down no one was selling thier animals to the houses.

we need to get up of are buts and stand up for them if we just sit around like nothing is going on they are just going to disapear like all the other animals that happened to so if i were you i would get off my but and save them because i dont want to see them dispear forever because that would be ashamed to let that happen to them and this is only coming from a 12 turning 13 sixthgrader.

my parents rescued an American Quarter Horse which I had all thru my childhood, "HONDO" my truly best friend...and my heart aches reading this info and having recently visited Carson City, Nevada I was informed thousands of wild horses are auctioned near there every January for rescue. This cause and all of its participants have my deepest respect! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS, KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL WORK.

GOD BLESS YOU and all who are assisting you.I was just saying the other day on facebook that we should save their natural lands and fence them in thier natural land since farmers and government want to take this land away for cattle and big companies. Why is it that we are willing to do more for animals that should never be domesticated than we do for these horses/burros. If only you could make sure that you were able to rescue those used in Cheyenne and other places for their stupid "wild horse races"

I am glad to see that there are others who care about these loyal and wonderful creatures. I own mustangs that I purchased from BLM in 2006 and I plan on buying 4 more. I could not ask for a better mount and a more loyal companion. This time around I am taking in the yearlings. Many of the yearlings do not make it with the way they round them up. Many also do not understand the mentality of the mustang. I applaud Ms. Pickens for her work and she will need all our support to fight the bureaucrats. Kudos Madeline!

Im glad after reading to see that birth control is the goal to stop the senseless out of control management of the herds and to maintain a legacy that will ensure they will be cared for until they die in a humane manner ,by nature or natural causes.Bless you for taking on this cause!they deserve to be wild and untamed where they belong on the land, and having future generations in mind and caring until the end for the American Mustang. They deserve this the American West was won along time ago and their are enough horse breeders in the US letting horses starve to death in their backyards i see it on the news everyday,Im hoping for an American registry that will require quality in all the herds in the US ,instead of at the hands of inexperienced people without a clue on quality and adding to the already out of control american horse populations.Bottom line we need smarter horse owners and less breeding in America.

I do appreciate what you are doing to help keep what horses and burros that you can out of harms way ..What Id like to know is why cant something be done about it NOW? Why does it take 30 + years to decide on the fate of these wonderful horses? Meanwhile they suffer at the hands of unmerciful men with no hearts. Why cant the country music community or even the rock music community have a concert to show awarness of this national problem and use those funds to a greater purpose. We dont need to feed foreign countrys we need to care for what is ours and what was here before we were. The mustangs are monuments to our country! They are being tore down one by one. When the mustangs are gone the respect that I once had for our goverment will be compeletely gone! Theres not much left at this point! I am more interested in the Mustangs then I am Iran or Iraq I dont care about those other countries. I only care about my own and what is going on in it... This is wrong ..WHY DOES'NT ANYONE SEE THAT? What would make me think any one would or could care as they stole the land from the native Indians, killed them off one by one and their buffalo one by one all that is left is the Mustangs and they will be killed unmercifully ONE BY ONE!

FACT SHEET FOR SPRUCE RANCH Madeleine Pickens has purchased the first property to launch an eco-sanctuary for wild horses in Elko County, Nevada. The ranch is located approximately 35 miles south of Wells, NV on Highway 93, a main north south travel artery and within 35 miles of Interstate 80. THE PROPERTY: The ranch encompasses nearly 600,000 acres of deeded and public land allotments. It is watered by 26 wells and 17 springs. Spruce Mountain rises over 10,000 feet in the center of the ranch and the ranch is flanked by two valleys rich in feed, the Independence Valley to the West and the Goshute Valley to the East. While there is ample feed on the public land allotments for summer months, forage production for the winter months and times of inclement weather conditions will be a key part of the final proposal. Mrs. Pickens now has another piece of property under contract, the Warm Springs Ranch, a parcel of land that includes 4,000 deeded acres and 22,000 public land acres. This property will serve as the entrance to the sanctuary and the deeded land includes a number of center pivots that will provide forage production for winter months. THE STARTUP PLAN FOR THE SANCTUARY: In our numerous discussions with the BLM, they indicated concerns about trying to take too many horses in the initial startup phase. Therefore, the initial startup will include 1,000 horses taken from existing short term holding facilities. It should be noted , however, that the ranch can be quickly improved and expanded to increase the number of horses annually with the eventual intent to take as many as 11,000 horses, the total number currently in short term holding. As previously noted, the ranch will be entirely fenced, precluding spillover to surrounding ranches, and the entire horse population will be non-reproductive. It should be the goal of the BLM and Congress to work with the Foundation to help expand the capacity of the ranch to increase the savings to the taxpayer and decrease the problems associated with excess wild horses currently in holding. THE FINANCIALS: The BLM is spending an average of $5.75 per day per horse in current short term holding facilities. The sanctuary will take those same horses for $1.25 per day per horse, thereby saving $4.50 per day per horse. Those savings equate to $1,654,000 per year for every 1000 horses that can be accommodated at the sanctuary. That figure does not include cost of living increases incurred by the government holding the horses. It should be pointed out that the BLM currently pays $1.25 per day on average for ALL the horses in long term holding. Equally important, when looking at the $1.25 per day per horse figure, is the fact that the Foundation that operates the sanctuary will reinvest 100% of the stipend received from the government back into the project. This stands in stark contrast to the current arrangements whereby private contractors capture as much of the government money as possible as profit. Reinvesting the money benefits the horses and provides the public with a unique experience as they visit this national monument. It should also be pointed out that Madeleine Pickens has purchased the land with private funds and will deed it over to the Foundation in perpetuity for the purposes of a national eco sanctuary for wild horses. This again stands in stark contrast to the proposal by the Secretary to use taxpayer money to purchase land for “preserves.” The BLM has not gotten a handle on the excess wild horse problem over the years and the numbers have continued to mount while they have pursued a strategy of gather, gather, gather. This failure to look at the larger picture has resulted in administrative costs for various holding programs of millions and million of dollars. It is time to move in a different direction. SUMMARY: This proposal provides the only real alternative to the current method of holding horses, standing them in pens for what often proves to be years. It saves the government and taxpayer money, provides an experience for the American people where they can come and see wild horses in a location that will offer a full range of amenities, including a high tech learning center and a wide range of recreational opportunities that will cater to the needs and interests of everyone who visits. It will generate significant tax revenues for local government, provide jobs and other revenues associated with tourist travel.

Dear Madeleine + Co. It does my heart such good to see all the wonderful work that you and your fellow horse advocates are doing. I can't imagine that there's a horse person out there that is not aware of the work you do when it comes to Saving America's Mustangs. Our job now is to bring this to the attention of all North American, and any other country that has people who care. Having studied in France, I know that they aren't all meat-eaters! The French, as well as other Europeans, can also present a powerful voice to try and ban the importation of horse meat in their own respective countries. It's amazing the energy behind a positive thought, and all the energy that can be organized via the InternetThank you for all your efforts, and thanks for posting the article that I brought to your attention <3 A National Injustice: The Federal Government’s Systematic Removal and Eradication of an Icon Stellar Work!

I have watched a lot of the videos and have observed that the mustangs have blood running from their noses that is called winded and means they have ruptured thier lungs and that is a death sentance for any horse we need a new law written that if they insist chasing these animals then it should be horse to horse ,they quit doing that because the people who did round ups with horses lost several they got winded from running to long ok to run the mustangs to death with motorized vehicles helicopter because they know it will kill their riding horses if they round up with them, get a new law on this pres bush is who eliminated the old law ,wild horse annie got a date with congress why cant we I would gladly stand in front of congress and plead for these animals who are now about 1/10 of what were alive when wild horse annie fought for them

The American Mustang is as much of a symbol of freedom on the ground as the Bald Eagle is in the air. Make the BLM custodial care for the Mustang go away and give it to people who care it would cost less and be tax money well spent for a change.

I am just really Proud of the work that Mrs. Madeleine Pickens has done in the past and is still doing. She has thousands of folks behind Her. It's sooo tragic to watch the tapes of how the BLM rounds up all those Beautiful, helpless Mustangs and at the worst time, anyway with so many babies and 100's lost their lives so painfully along with their Mothers. I have been crying every single day and I am just sick to my stomach over this and I can NOT watch those video's any longer !!!! I think I would give my own legs to save every single one of those poor Mustangs, coming from a Mustang owner. All they want is a Home, food and water a healthy diet and someone to care "for them"

I drive by the mustang holding site off Pyramid Hwy 30 miles North of Reno, Nevada. I do not know how these horses got there, but I will say, they are cared for with compasion. They have fresh water, feed daily, and marginal room to roam. What hurts me is, where do they go from here. They try to have as many as they can be adopted, they return some to the open range in Montana, but I fear some are slaughter. This sounds like a great foundation to support one of many N America's history that is being lost. Keep up the good work. Enjoy

I was recently in NV and stopped by the "adoption center" there were a group of mustangs in there at the time. They were stressed, anxious, some were injured. When i returned, I had a note on my e-mail from a man friend that has to go to Japan on business and he says that in Japan, horse meat is the next "kobe beef". So, as whale and dolphin become less attainable and all of the sharks have their fins cut off and they are thrown back into our ocean to die a slow and agonizing death, we let Japan and other asian/european countries rape our soil here in the US??? I don't think it's about big oil, I think it's about a nation NOT settled with the help of the horse and their HUGE population that have now decided horse should be on the menu. But, what do I know. I just found out about this from the guy that goes to Japan and said how good the horse meat is. We have to stop the demand for the meat and make it illegal to sell these animals to any other country. They have not overpopulated the western states! That's ludicris.

It is absolutely deplorable what the government is doing to this beautiful creatures. I totally support you in your efforts to save the Mustangs. Good old government! I wonder how Mr. Ken Salazar would like to have his family rounded up and be terrorized by helicopters! It absolutely makes me sick to my stomach what they are doing. We all need to support you and pray to God that these horses can be saved. They are part of America's Frontier and belong where they are undisturbed. I have been so disturbed by the videos of the roundup and would like to see them get their just punishment for what they are doing. If you abuse animals you held accountable for it, or at least should be. What makes our representatives above the law? They need to be good examples for the American public not executioners. Or maybe they need to be executed for their actions. I hope and pray that SAM can save these wonderful and beautiful horses that have roamed the frontier much longer than these despicable politicians. And they wonder why Americans don't want to vote. I personally have NO faith in them whatsoever!!!

I am an equine natural hoofcare specialist. Much of the knowledge I have comes from research done on the mustangs living in the American West. I was born and raised in Alaska, and lived there for almost 40 years. I grew up with the government mucking about with the wildlife up there, too. I came to understand that people in general couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag, let alone "manage" wild animal populations. This all comes down to politics and money. I can't stand by idly and watch people motivated by greed destroy our magnificent herds of wild ones.

We need to get the word out to all of our friends and family about the BLM and what they are doing to these wild horses and burros. I have been to BLM land and have seen wild horses, it is a pleasure. I have also seen oil rigs, derricks and gas drilling too. You better believe that the reason the BLM is rounding up these beautiful creatures is for these oil and gas companies. It has got to stop! The rate it is going, there will be no more wild horses left to see on our BLM land!

We thank the good Lord that He saw fit to give you such a huge heart to find it within yourself to make it your mission to have custodial care, andthe wisdom regarding the necessary care and requirements of these awesomely beautiful wild mustangs for future generations. Also in doing the "right thing" for these majestic creatures of God instead of subjecting them to a so-called life penned-up in corrals for years. Also I wish to acknowledge your husband, Boone, for his kind heartedness and generosity in allowing you, Medeleine, to take on this massive undertaking but all of the time knowing this is what you truly cared about most, AFTER HIM. Thanks Mr. Pickens !!! Bless each and every one who has played such a crucial role in this master plan. May it come to pass none too soon for the sake of the horses and burros.

I couldn't believe the story I saw on CNN-HN last night! Once again, the government thinks it knows better than well-meaning citizens with the RIGHT idea like Madeleine's who's creating a wild sanctuary for our nation's wild horses. Thus, once again, our tax dollars are being wasted by spending a million (probably more) dollars on their cruel round-up. This is past the point of ridiculous and just plain old stupid. As a horse-lover I'm not just mad, I'm incensed! Is there some way I/we could start a petition to have the horses given over to Madeleine and her cause?

I have been an online activist for the last decade and signed many petitions, written letters to officials, Congress and Media Editors concerning the protection and preservation of both wild horses, Mustangs and Bison. I have even written personal letters to Governors. In response to recent Big Media News Releases about the pledging of private land to wild ECO-preserves for horses being rejected simply because B-L-M agendas are already underway I find utterly absurd and believe a National Federal Class Action Lawsuit be fomented!
